A network of climate shelters has been established in Sassari. In recent days, the city council resolution, proposed by Environment Councilor Pierluigi Salis, established 22 shelters, located in the city center and surrounding suburbs, to combat increasingly frequent heat waves. These include six parks, eight gardens, four libraries, and other tree-lined city spaces, mapped by territorial planner Nicola Solinas, commissioned by the Environment and Public Parks department. A geodatabase was used to identify the spaces, both open and closed, that offer climate comfort, within the objectives of the Local Climate Change Adaptation Plan, approved by the city council in 2025, which highlighted the three risks of flooding, drought, and heat waves. The climate shelters were chosen for their accessibility, usability, and free admission, as well as their ability to provide thermal relief while maintaining their basic function. And, regarding open shelters, the degree of shading that trees can provide was considered, complementing the other components of an ideal microclimate, such as lawns and vegetation. However, the municipal administration has implemented several actions related to climate change mitigation, including Adaptwise.
The three-year project is carrying out two pilot heat mitigation projects on the Cervi and Nurra crossroads in the Monte Rosello neighborhood. These include creating shaded areas, resurfacing, planting trees to complement the hackberry trees, and providing suitable seating.
"But also on this point," says councilor and deputy mayor Pierluigi Salis, "we are planning a series of interventions to repave other areas."
Regarding the network of climate shelters, an experimental initiative being implemented for the first time in Sardinia in Sassari, Latte Dolce is missing from the list of areas . Salis assures that discussions are underway to create similar spaces in the neighborhood, and one of the options being considered is Via Paganini, where the recently dismantled urban gardens once stood.
THE LIST – The shelters are: the "Il tappetino" and "Monsignor Paolo Carta" gardens, Via Siglienti, "San Giovanni Bosco", Emiciclo (Sirio stop), the Public Gardens, Via Washington, and Via Frassetto. Also included are the "Emanuela Loi" and "Solidarity" parks, a former rural holiday camp, "Maria Carta", Baddimanna, and Monserrato. Then there are the areas of Corso Vico, Piazza Caduti del Lavoro, the Poliss Center, the Central Municipal Library - Palazzo d'Usini, the Caniga Municipal Library, the Li Punti Municipal Library, the "Enrico Costa" Municipal Historical Archives, and the Sassari University Library.
