The Children's Cavalcade drew a large turnout in Sassari. The mini version of the larger event, held in May, was postponed a month ago due to bad weather. Yesterday, it was held again in the city center, along the route from Piazza Santa Caterina, along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to Piazza Castello, and with a U-turn, arriving in Piazza Tola for a final performance. 250 young participants came from Bono, Ittiri, Mamoiada, Oristano, Osilo, Posada, Sennori, Siligo, Tempio Pausania, Villaputzu, Thiesi, and Sassari.
The Municipality is supporting the initiative, along with the Maria Carta Foundation, whose president, Leonardo Marras, declared: "Children are our future. They will travel the world with tablets in their pockets and launeddas in their hearts." Dressed in the clothes and jewelry of their hometowns, the children, the youngest being three years old, attracted hundreds of people, receiving applause for their dance and tribal performances. This was the case of the Mamuthones and Issohadores of Mamoiada.
"They've been training for three months," their leader reports as he helps them don the heavy leathers weighed down by cowbells. The young members of "Is Curruleris de su Brugu" from Oristano are also enthusiastic, dancing and simulating the Sartiglia horse races. "From a young age," say two of the group's leaders, Rita Carta and Paolo Vanacore, "we pass on the tradition to them, hoping that, as adults, they will continue it." And, given its success, it's expected that the Children's Cavalcade will be held again next year, hoping to become a tradition in its own right.
