A man lying on the floor in his bedroom, his head in a pool of blood, his three stunned brothers standing nearby. This is the scene that the State Police officers found when they rushed to Viziliu, in the countryside of Sassari .

The victim is Franco Pilo, 78 years old: lots of blood and abrasions all over his body, which suggest a violent death . This is currently the most accredited hypothesis, even if an illness and a consequent fall are not completely ruled out.

The officers were alerted shortly after 4pm yesterday by a neighbour. While chatting about this and that with the victim's brother, the latter told them: "Everything is fine at home, but my brother is dead" .

The house was turned upside down, the three brothers were taken to the police station for questioning. Their stories are very confusing .

Franco Pilo was the eldest of five brothers: four of them lived in an abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of Sassari , the fifth elsewhere. The house was in terrible sanitary conditions , the four lived a secluded life but had never caused problems for the neighborhood, nor had the police ever intervened in that house.
