Several prison policemen were injured yesterday, in the Sassari prison , by an inmate from the Cagliari institute.

The man, of foreign nationality, " also attentive to Islamic fundamentalism - explains Antonio Cannas, Sappe national delegate for Sardinia - had just arrived from the Cagliari prison where he had set fire to a cell : he immediately went into a rage, hitting first the policemen assigned to the first entry controls, and then lash out at other agents. All the policemen, who have been very good at containing man's violent excesses, had to resort to hospital treatment ".

The appeal launched by Cannas, who expressed solidarity with his bruised and injured colleagues, is that of an urgent intervention “because the Sassari prison police staff are on the brink . We cannot continue like this, without a minimum of security for colleagues who go to work and do not know if and when they will return home, without bruises or whatever ".

The general secretary of Sappe, Donato Capece, also spoke on the case: “I am concerned about this new serious episode that took place in the Sassari prison. I return to denounce how the consistent presence of inmates with psychiatric problems has long been the cause of serious problems with regard to the order and safety of Sardinian prisons and of the country. Prison police personnel are exhausted by the tiring pace of work due to the violent and continuous attacks. And it is serious that, despite being aware of the problems connected with the large presence of psychiatric inmates, the competent authorities have not yet been able to find a solution. Every day something happens in Italian prisons, and it has almost become ordinary to report what happens between the bars. In this way we cannot go further: it is a continuous and daily dripping . The management of inmates with psychiatric problems, who have invaded the prisons after the closure of the OPGs, also deserves attention and an urgent and complete resolution. What is certain is that their presence has increased the number of critical events in prisons ”.

“If the current ministerial, departmental and regional leaders do not place the guarantee of the physical safety of prison policemen among the intervention priorities - underlines Sappe -, they will soon hear our voice of anger and protest in the streets. The prisons are in the hands of the criminals and the prison administration has entrusted the prison policies to the Guarantors of the prisoners, making the safety of the structures less secure. Being a prison policeman in prison is increasingly dangerous and we feel abandoned by everyone: by the institutions, by politics and above all by the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Penitentiary Administration ”.
