Copper thieves at the former Hotel Turritania in Sassari. This iconic project, a symbol of the historic center's redevelopment and a vision of a new approach to housing, has fallen victim to the city's age-old tradition: the removal of its downspouts.
One or more unknown individuals climbed over the construction site barrier last night and stole at least five pipes. All of this was observed under video surveillance, which could give a face to the anonymous thief.
This is yet another episode that is causing copper to disappear from the city, particularly between the Cappuccini district and the historic center.
After the theft of drainpipes on Via Monache Cappuccine, where another municipal construction site is located, and those in residential buildings, now no longer countable, the theft has arrived in Turritania. This renovation was financed with over €6 million in funds from the Pinqua (Pinqua) program, obtained by the previous Campus administration. The current administration, led by Mayor Giuseppe Mascia, is completing the project. So much so that soon, following the call for applications for housing, new tenants will be able to occupy the 18 apartments designated for the so-called "gray zone."
