Reduced staff and alarm attacks against doctors and nurses: this is what the regional councilor of the M5s, Desirè Manca denounces, regarding the Neuropsychiatry department of the Aou of Sassari .
" Aggressions are the order of the day and highly alarming," underlines Manca. «The latest dates back to four days ago, when a female doctor on duty was attacked by a patient in a highly agitated state and ended up in the emergency room with a fifteen-day prognosis. This is the drama that is experienced in the ward at Stecca Bianca , where the constant requests for strengthening of the staff plan seem to be punctually ignored and those who work in a department which, by its nature, presents a very high risk, have their hands tied».
«Here, where both psychiatric and neurological patients are hospitalized – he continues – there is no containment room and even the figures of psychologist and educator are missing . Here, where the psychophysical fatigue is exhausting because the daily accesses concern cases of attempted suicide, self-harm and countless very delicate situations, a multidisciplinary team is missing and the recruitment of indispensable figures has long been awaited. The competition launched twenty days ago, in fact, has not yet been published in the Official Gazette. The situation is at the limit and it is necessary that no further time be wasted and that the selection be carried out as soon as possible».
«So far we have witnessed many promises and very few facts – adds Manca again -. The staff is exhausted and working in inhumane conditions. Suffice it to consider that each shift is covered on average by three doctors, of which often only one is structured, who jump through hoops between the on-call service, active 24 hours a day, the clinics for scheduled visits, the inpatient ward, with nine ordinary beds to which are added the cases that come from other internal departments. Insults, threats and attacks are impossible to contain every day if the department is unmanned".
"We cannot tolerate that the staff is forced to suffer more - the conclusion - for this reason it is necessary that the councilor Doria , beyond the promises, ensures an adequate organic endowment urgently".
