Nine competitions to find medical teachers in Sassari. They were announced yesterday, in the headquarters of the Sassari university, by the health councilor Carlo Doria, the rector Gavino Mariotti, the general director of the Aou Antonio Spano and the director of the Medicine department Angela Spanu.

Nine figures, 5 full professors and 4 associates, who will cover uncovered boxes, extending the number of the 21 schools currently operational. «These are paediatrics, pediatric surgery, nephrology, neurosurgery - announces Spanu - The agreement will then strengthen other existing ones such as ophthalmology and gastroenterology». «Thanks to an important effort by the Region of 11 million and 250 thousand euros - states Mariotti - Because the law provides that positions with external financing can be advertised as long as salaries are guaranteed for 15 years».

The Region's investment, for 6 positions, aims to address the shortage of teachers who must also take care of research and assistance in addition to teaching. «We must train these professionals ourselves - adds Doria - we cannot think that those who specialize in Padua will accept a position in Nuoro». The competitions, which should be announced in the Official Journal in February, will allow, together with the reactivation of Neurosurgery, Pediatrics and Gastroenterology, also the birth of Pediatric Surgery on the Island for the first time. Precisely the latter is one of the emergencies of the Sassari healthcare system because it is currently lacking in the necessary figures, so much so that children are forced to go to Cagliari, or the peninsula, for operations. «We are aware of the difficulties - declares the Aou general manager - unfortunately all attempts to find someone in previous years have not borne fruit. But the arrival of a full professor and an associate professor will help provide answers." However, a year could pass before the change of pace is achieved.
