The new Sarrabus irrigation system created by the Southern Sardinia Reclamation Consortium was inaugurated this morning. There are 142 intake works available to citrus growers to which they can connect to get water.

The water resource comes from the locality of Prosciumini (Villaputzu) through twelve kilometers of underground pipes and will be able to irrigate a maximum of fifty hectares of citrus groves (mostly Muravera). To satisfy the needs of the entire territory it will be necessary to wait for the construction of the second lot, i.e. an upstream work (in the San Vito area) which will allow the use of the Flumendosa dam system.

«In the meantime – underlines Efisio Perra, president of the Southern Sardinia Reclamation Consortium – we started with a first batch which is already functional and which allows, among other things, to limit the pumping from the wells and therefore the advancement of salinity. Obviously we also ask the Region for maximum commitment to start the work on the second lot, the decisive one."

Overall, the work will cost 8.4 million euros: 2.4 for the newly inaugurated lot and another six for the second lot.
