In the next few days, the firing ranges and the sea of Sardinia will be in full swing for the Mare Aperto 24 exercise, the great military simulation (with fire) organized by the Navy in its autumn version. Ships, planes and amphibious vehicles from numerous NATO nations will cross and speed through all the forbidden areas in front of Teulada, Quirra and Capo Frasca.

The ordinances with prohibitions and delimitation of the evacuation areas have yet to be issued. But among the leaders of the armed forces they have one certainty: these exercises bring (at least) one advantage for Sardinia.

Captain Massimiliano Molinas is sure of this, having spoken during the meeting of the Joint Committee on Military Easements which authorised the calendar for the Sardinian exercises in the second half of 2024.

The representative of the Region, Alessio Alias, had raised concerns about the fact that Comipa only dealt with the use of polygons but that there was no control over the prohibited sea areas: among these, over the years, stretches of water have appeared in front of Costa Rei, in the Golfo degli Angeli and in front of Santa Margherita di Pula which, certainly, are not part of polygons.

Molinas responded: "The Island benefits from these limitations, since during the last exercise about twenty devices dating back to the Second World War were identified and they were cleared in these days. These cleanups", he emphasized, "would have been impossible without imposing limitations because that type of activity requires the activation of security sectors".
