«I have encountered, during my experience as Regional Councilor, an important emergency relating to the relationship between prison detention and the rights of prisoners within the prisons of Sardinia».

These are the words of Carla Cuccu , regional councilor of the Health Commission . He continues: « Healthcare within Sardinian prisons is neglected and is in a serious crisis .
Total absence of staff at night , lack of medical nursing assistance and social health workers (OSS), insufficient presence of psychiatry specialists. Many Sardinian prison facilities are overcrowded and in dilapidated conditions, with poor hygiene conditions that undermine the dignity of prisoners. These are just some of the major problems encountered."
The absence of projects for reintegration into the world of work and a valid social-welfare support network are problems which, according to Cuccu, negatively affect the present and future lives of prisoners.

«I raised the problem of the lack of operational hospital detention departments in the hospitals of Nuoro, Sassari and Cagliari, in addition to the presence of only one Intensive Care Section (SAI) operational in Cagliari. What are the current conditions of the Cagliari Hospital Detention Department? On 1 April 2020 I filed question no. 377/A precisely by questioning the president of the Sardinia Region Solinas about it, and unfortunately no response has been received to date".
«It is necessary – continues Cuccu – to immediately allocate funds to encourage the hiring of doctors and social-health workers to be promptly inserted in Sardinian prisons, in order to improve the health situation within the penitentiary facilities».
«I would like to know – the conclusion – if the Regional Government is aware of all the critical issues previously highlighted, given that they are not few and have persisted for a long time.
My goal is to improve the living conditions of prisoners and operators in the penitentiary sector in Sardinia. Their role is fundamental. A modern country must think about the reintegration of prisoners into society, their training for the world of work, and above all their health, and must protect all operators who work in this sector."
