Sardinia under accusation: «The Region does not respond to requests for assisted suicide»
The Luca Coscioni Association denounces: «Access to documents denied» and announces a series of mobilizations until April 13Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Silence seems to hover in Sardinia around a topic that affects the life and freedom of choice of every citizen: assisted suicide. The Luca Coscioni association, which has been fighting for years for the right to voluntary assisted death, has presented a series of requests for access to documents in all Italian regions to obtain information on the requests received by health companies from 2020 to today, when the Constitutional Court ruling 242/2019 established the legality of voluntary assisted death in certain conditions. Yet, while the data has been made public in 11 Italian regions, in Sardinia the response from the Region seems to have been negative.
"The request cannot be accepted because the Offices do not have the information requested". It is with these words that the Sardinia Region would have responded to the Luca Coscioni association.
This despite the fact that Piedmont, Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and others have shared at least 51 requests for assisted suicide, Sardinia "refuses to transmit the data, creating a shadow of opacity on such a delicate and important issue".
This response, which comes after the public announcement by the majority groups in Sardinia that they have signed the proposed law on the end of life in November 2024, fuels further doubts about the real political will to address the issue of assisted suicide on the island. And, despite the promises, the discussion in the Chamber of Via Roma in Cagliari has not yet been scheduled.
"The Sardinia Region, a rare case in the national panorama, responds by saying that it does not have any information on requests for medically assisted suicide. This is unacceptable", say Filomena Gallo and Marco Cappato, respectively national secretary and treasurer of the Luca Coscioni association. "The time for announcements is over, now we need concreteness. It is urgent that the Chamber schedules the proposed law and that the Region guarantees transparency on a topic that concerns the freedom of choice of every citizen".
The association has thus decided to take the field with a regional mobilization, which will last until April 13, to raise awareness in the community and push so that Sardinia does not fall behind.
