In Sardinia the average amount of a social security check for retired people is 1,421 euros, therefore 18,473 per year with 13 months (14 in some cases). However, these are gross amounts and there are also those that go above average and are opposed to those that, on the contrary, are on the verge of subsistence.

A situation that has lasted for some time and that leads many families to count on the entry of the elderly person in the house to be able to move forward. In 2020 the great blow: in the year of the pandemic due to Covid, mostly the elderly died, when the vaccine was not yet there, those who made ends meet with their pensions. According to data from the INPS Observatory, 643,409 pensions are paid out on the island every month. This is the number of benefits, and not retirees, also because it is not uncommon for the same person to receive more than one income from the National Social Security Institute.

According to estimates, pensioners in Sardinia are just under 446 thousand.

Some numbers: 278,020 are old-age or seniority pensions which alone involve an expenditure of 5.137 billion per year (compared to contributions for one and a half billion). Disability benefits for residents amount to 47,739 and cost the social security institution 635 million euros per year (with an average of 12,298 euros per year gross per capita). The Sardinian branch of INPS also spends one billion and 141 million annually to pay survivors' pensions to 123,854 widows or widowers (and any dependent children). On average, the allowance is € 9,210 per year, or € 708 for thirteen months.

EMIGRATORS - A separate discussion deserves the one relating to former emigrants who return to Sardinia: as young people they worked in other regions paying contributions elsewhere, but collect their pension on the island, causing an imbalance between income and expenditure. As pointed out by Piero Agus, president of the INPS regional committee, the Institute "in Sardinia is the largest employer not of work, but of income".
