Sardinia is increasingly proving to be a land of griffon vultures . From the last census, dated November 12, the estimated population is between 316 and 338 specimens , numbers emerged thanks to 45 monitors in 15 locations.

The activities are foreseen by the Life Safe For Vultures project of which the Veterinary Department of the University of Sassari, which is the lead partner, the Forestas Agency, the Regional Forestry Corps, E-Distribuzione and the Vulture Conservation Foundation are partners.

«The census is always an opportunity to bring together what we like to define as the griffon vulture community in Sardinia - explains Fiammetta Berlinguer , professor of Veterinary medicine and scientific director of Life Safe for Vultures - It is a fundamental activity and it is only possible thanks to the availability of people and associations who, with their precious support, in various capacities contribute decisively to the safeguard of this species".

The observers, volunteers and enthusiasts, under the coordination of the Veterinary Department, worked with the support of the Lipu, L'AltraBosa and Earth Gardeners associations. Mauro Aresu also took part in the monitoring, who has been dedicated to studying the griffon vulture in Sardinia, and in particular in the Bosano area, since 1979. »The data confirm the positive trend of the Sardinian griffon vulture population, with an increase of about 20%, in line - he specifies - with the objectives of the Life Save for Vultures project».
