Things seemed to be improving. After the sudden cardiac arrest that struck him last June while walking on Via San Martino in Selargius , the long days in the hospital, the transfer to Mater Olbia, and the start of rehabilitation, Massimiliano Conti, 50 , seemed ready to recover.

But then suddenly everything went downhill again: "It turned out my brother has a bad infection and a tracheoesophageal fistula, which is becoming a gateway for bacteria," says his sister Francesca. She adds: "Essentially, he's at risk of sepsis and could die at any moment."

All this because "he's supposed to have surgery in Padua. The doctors have been contacted by Mater Hospital, but so far we haven't received a response. Weeks go by, and my brother is still waiting for this surgery, with the risk of not making it. We've endured so much, but now we really can't take it anymore."

Francesca gets emotional when she talks about her brother, "He's so beautiful, you should see his blue eyes. We're orphans, and he's the only family I have left."

Until that June 21st, Massimiliano "was fine. We had just had coffee and he had gone out shopping. Shortly afterward, the police arrived to tell me he was in the hospital."
