The population is aging and the need for care is increasing, but doctors and places of care are decreasing. In the last ten years Sardinia has lost over 600 beds , several hospital departments and specialists, four hospital facilities and 332 general practitioners .
Alarming numbers come from the latest yearbook of the ministry, involving large cities and small centers in a problem that concerns the whole of Italy. In a decade at a national level 74 hospitals have been closed (7%, there were 1,070, they have dropped to 996) and eliminated, between public and private, over 10,500 beds (from 226,387 to 215,827).
" Orthopedics is probably the specialty that has suffered the most sensational cuts ," warns Emanuele Cabras, a doctor at Brotzu and Cimo-Fesmed company representative. "With the closure of the Marino hospital and the downsizing related to Covid, many beds in Orthopedics and Traumatology have been sacrificed, and never recovered."
