The balance of the fires of the last two days in Sardinia is very heavy. And the hand of man is behind most of the events: the certainty comes from the discovery of primers in the south of the island and in Gairo. Then the mistral did the rest, pushing the flames that attacked hundreds of hectares of Mediterranean scrub and threatened the lives of a thousand people, many tourists, terrified and evacuated from Posada and Costa Rei. Just in Posada the drinking water emergency partially returned after the flames reached the San Giovanni purifying plant. The immediate intervention of Abbanoa's technicians allowed a repair to be made in a very short time.
Today, however, was another day of fire. 6 emergencies that required the intervention of aircraft out of a total of 22 fires.
In the morning the Forestry Department worked in the areas of Posada (Loc. Abba Ia), Gairo (Loc. Su Ilai), Monastir (Loc. M. Zara), San Giovanni Suergiu (Loc. Pod. and Salice) and Girasole (Loc. Pirastu Ladu) with regional fire-fighting service aircraft and 3 Canadair aircraft, 2 of which from Ciampino and 1 from Olbia.
The other fires were those of Dolianova, in the "Riu Bonarba" area, in Castiadas, where, thanks to the timely intervention of the teams on the ground and of the aerial vehicles, the flames covered an area of about 4 hectares of Mediterranean maquis, bare pasture and eucalyptus trees. And more fires in Santa Teresa Gallura, in the "La Torraccia" locality, in Santa Maria Coghinas, in Oristano in the "Podere 28" locality, and in Loiri Porto San Paolo, in the "C. by L'Ea Frisca”.
Tomorrow the strong wind of the past few hours should decrease in intensity and give Sardinia a break, in the Cagliari area the alert is now orange level .
And the Forestry investigators don't stop: they continue with the investigations.
The president of the Region assures: "We will find those responsible", while for Laura Cadeddu, geologist and president of the Sardinian section of the Italian Society of Environmental Geology, "the fires are probably a manifestation of criminal appetites and interests, as demonstrated by the fact that they are all , or for the most part, located in sectors of high environmental and landscape value such as wetlands and ponds".
The GrIg, Legal Intervention Group, launches the idea of creating an environmental Daspo: «The arsonists must be eradicated from the socio-environmental context where they destroy nature, homes, work activities, at least for a suitable period of time. Attacks on the environment (and on cultural heritage) - they specify - could and should be a new privileged field for the adoption of similar preventive measures".
At the national level, meanwhile, today the CDM approved new measures that also concern Sardinia and touch on the issue of fires. «The Government - underlines the minister Daniela Santanchè - did not hesitate even for a second in concretely supporting, right from the start, the tourism sector which is suffering damage caused by the fires of recent weeks and this is why today we have brought from 10 to 15 million the endowment of the Fund that the Ministry makes available to tourists and operators who have been damaged by the fires in Sicily first and now by Sardinia which bears the wounds of fires, alas, caused by arsonists. We have acted, and we are acting, with punctuality and a spirit of belonging in an emergency moment of the nation both by increasing the penalties and legislation against those who commit crimes by setting fire to our territory and by helping these territories by supporting them in the tourism sector. As Ministry of Tourism, we aim to quickly ensure the effectiveness of the protection of travelers and operators in the tourism and accommodation sector. By working together, we will heal the wounds of Sicily and Sardinia so that they continue to be ready to welcome tourists from all over the world".
