The Municipality of Laconi is no longer able to safely manage the Sarcidano horses and has decided to put this native species at risk of extinction up for sale .

The objective is to reduce the number of specimens that populate the area in which they live, the Funtanamela state forest.

The agreement stipulated some time ago between the Municipality, owner of the horses, the Forestas Agency and the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Sassari provides for the presence of a maximum of fifty animals. Now, however, there are over sixty.

The municipal offices are already working to draw up the tender. The competition will be aimed at private individuals, breeders, institutions, sports associations that carry out their activity in Sardinia and equestrian clubs. Six hundred euros will be the base price per item . For now the Municipality has decided to put only male horses up for sale.

A ban on slaughter will then be imposed and mating will also not be free: whoever buys the horse will have to have it mated with a Sarcidano mare or with a species that according to veterinarians would not compromise the breed.
