The theft of sand and pebbles in Sardinia does not stop this year either. And even if upon arrival on the island tourists find "billboards warning them of the ban on taking away sand and shells", the warnings are not enough: "harsher sanctions are needed". The Region's Environment Councilor Rossana Laconi wants to raise the bar against transgressors, after the latest episodes of yesterday and today, with Lazio and German tourists stopped at the port while they were leaving with goods from the Sardinian beaches .

«It is a problem of civic education, of information that should come from families but we do everything possible to inform those arriving in Sardinia about the bans - continues Laconi -. But it's not just our problem, there's always someone who eradicates the edelweiss in the mountains or damages a monument in Rome." And even if there is no shortage of warnings among posters and social media campaigns, there is always someone trying to steal a piece of the island.

The latest advertising campaign dates back to a week ago with a video by Geppi Cucciari inviting tourists to take home "a Vermentino, a pecorino, a lifeguard from Olbia". «The cartels are gigantic, it's not an information problem because those who try to take away sand and shells know that it can't be done. But they always stop them at ports and airports. It's time to increase sanctions and be even more severe."

«If we can legislate on this or find measures to intervene in this sector, we will certainly do so. Let's continue with information campaigns, as we are doing for the danger of fires and the request not to waste water. But perhaps something more is needed beyond posters and brochures", concludes Laconi.
