Tension in the emergency room of the Nostra Signora di Bonaria hospital in San Gavino Monreale. During the night between Saturday and Sunday, a person who arrived at the emergency facility after 11 p.m. pushed a health worker and also the security guards against whom he then attacked, making it necessary for the carabinieri to intervene, who restored calm and removed the person responsible, whose position is now being examined by the authorities.

The complaint

A fact that once again highlights the issue of safety for healthcare personnel and this despite the fact that the Medio Campidano ASL has already approved the adoption of bodycams in addition to the armed security service to protect doctors, nurses and healthcare workers from attacks. The trade unionist Gino Cadeddu of the secretariat of the CGIL Funzione Pubblica of South Western Sardinia firmly denounces the incident: «This fact is very serious and puts work in the healthcare sector at risk. The emergency room is no longer the last access for people who need care, but the only one. These episodes must be forcefully denounced and condemned. In this specific case, a healthcare worker was pushed by a person who wanted to use the stretcher instead of waiting in an armchair to be treated. The same guards who intervened then had to do triage because at least one of them was punched in the face – continues Cadeddu –. Any type of violence is always to be condemned and we get to the point that even the patients, after hours of queuing, are exasperated. In areas such as Medio Campidano and Sulcis, but more generally in the whole of Sardinia, there is too often a lack of medical guards and many people (especially the elderly) do not even have a general practitioner. Furthermore, it is necessary to increase the staff, especially in emergency departments such as the emergency room".

The sentence

Meanwhile, in the Medio Campidano Local Health Authority, the mental health centers of Sanluri and San Gavino, and the emergency room of the Nostra Signora di Bonaria hospital will be the first to receive and adopt bodycam devices to prevent attacks that increasingly involve healthcare personnel, especially in hospitals: "We express the strongest condemnation - underlines the general manager Giorgio Carboni - towards these unacceptable acts of violence. It is important to underline that, for years, our hospital has had a 24-hour security service, with the constant presence of security guards. It is essential that society as a whole recognizes and respects the crucial role of our healthcare workers. Our staff work tirelessly to provide care and assistance to patients, often under conditions of high stress and pressure. Violence, whether physical or verbal, not only puts their safety at risk, but also undermines the quality of care we can offer".
