Last night on Bobba beach in Carloforte, the Caretta Caretta turtles hatched. Around fifty turtles saw the light of day in the dead of night, with a beautiful moon and calm sea providing the backdrop for an event as natural as it is evocative.

The nest , one of three in Carloforte this year (the other two are on Lucaise beach), was under constant surveillance by Tartatour volunteers and marine biologists from the Laguna Nora center. Furthermore, as per protocol, the nest was monitored by a data logger and a temperature detector.

"From the data , we knew the hatching was imminent ," says Geppi Ollano, marine biologist at the Laguna Nora center. "It was wonderful to see them head towards the sea; everything happened in an extremely natural and orderly way, without any human interference. Now they'll be in the open sea."

After the Bobba's hatching, all attention is focused on the nests in Lucaise, also on the island of San Pietro, and Spiaggia Grande in Calasetta. "From monitoring, they should have hatched almost simultaneously," says Ollano. Meanwhile, another nest in Lucaise may have already hatched in recent days. "Everything suggests that the event has already occurred," says the biologist. "In the next few days, as per protocol, we will inspect the nest."
