A surgery department with five doctors, an emergency room open only six hours a day . It is the emergency situation in which the Nostra Signora di Bonaria hospital in San Gavino , the reference facility for the Middle Campidano area, finds itself, or is about to find itself, which now worries the twenty-eight mayors of the area, so much so as to convince them to write to the Region .

With a letter addressed to the regional health councilor, Carlo Doria, and to the company top management, the first citizens explain how the state of the general surgery department has been experiencing for about a year " a reduction in medical staff such as to prevent surgical activity emergency and elective surgery also needs to be significantly reduced: to date", the mayors highlight, " only 5 surgeons are on duty , a situation which essentially determines the suspension of emergency surgical operations and undermines the efficiency of the hospital, as well as the local healthcare system in general."

Not only that, because that of the department would not be the only critical issue: «To this emergency contingency is added a further serious critical issue, widely foreseeable, which consists in the imminent closure of the emergency room from 2pm to 8am . This will happen", they underline, "following the overall loss, in the coming weeks, of four doctors working in the aforementioned emergency room, with the consequence that its medical staff will be reduced to a staff of only 3-4 units, without a concrete prospect of integration in the short term".

On this last point, in particular, the mayors do not intend to back down: «We consider the closure, even partial, of the emergency room of the San Gavino Monreale hospital to be unsustainable and inadmissible», they say. An absence of the department, like that of emergency surgery, would lead to the transfer of operations to Cagliari, with " an increase in the danger to the life and health of citizens , especially those affected by time-dependent pathologies, and in a further increase in terms of workload for the medical staff of the same hospitals in Cagliari".

The solution identified, and requested from Councilor Doria and the leaders of the Medio Campidano Local Health Authority, is to freeze the transfers of emergency room doctors, to urgently adopt the measures necessary to make up for the shortage in staffing.
