Salmonella alert in the Cagliari area: three outbreaks were discovered in about two weeks by the Local Health Authority's Public Health Department following admissions to the emergency room of patients who had contracted the dangerous infection. The consequences were not as lethal as the case of the deadly botulism at the Latin festival in Monserrato (two women died), but the alarm is high.
A case was discovered in the emergency room of the Policlinico, where a patient from a therapeutic community in the hinterland was admitted on September 30: he tested positive for group E salmonella. The epidemiological investigation revealed no other infections among guests or employees of the facility.
Another patient who tested positive had eaten undercooked chicken at a restaurant in Cagliari. Investigations conducted by the SISP revealed three additional cases, linked to the same restaurant. In this case, the patients had eaten canapés with sauces.
The third case concerns a cancer patient who had turned to Businco after having an aperitif in a bar in a town on the southwestern coast of the Golfo degli Angeli.
At this time, the Local Health Authority (ASL) reports, no patients are in serious or life-threatening condition. However, the Local Health Authority's Public Health Service "recommends greater attention to food storage and handling (especially raw eggs, raw milk, meat and meat products, sauces, dessert mixes, and artisanal and commercial ice creams) as well as thorough washing of fruit and vegetables before consumption."
