A new political upheaval has taken place within the space of a few hours in the Nuoro City Council. Councilor Irene Melis has announced her departure from the Democratic Party group to join the political project of Sinistra Futura. The decision was announced in a statement, in which Melis explained that she reached the decision after extensive reflection on the state of the left and the social situation in the country. According to the councilor, the progressive camp has long been experiencing a profound crisis of representation, often incapable of offering a clear vision of society and distant from the concrete needs of people, particularly those experiencing economic and social hardship.
Melis argues that, faced with growing inequality and pressure on social rights, it is necessary to rebuild a truly left-wing political space, capable of representing jobs, rights, and social justice. For this reason, she has decided to join the Sinistra Futura project, which she defines as a potential "constituent assembly for a new left." In the City Council, Melis will continue to serve in the mixed group, while declaring her political support for the Sinistra Futura project. However, the decision immediately sparked political tension. The Sinistra Futura group leader in the City Council, Angelo Coda, took a very clear stance, stating that the group is not willing to welcome "defectors or opportunists."
Coda was among the leaders of the recent vote of no confidence against his councilor Domenico Cabula, contributing to an already tense atmosphere within the majority. For his part, Melis announced that he had already requested and received an official yes to the Sinistra Futura membership card, reiterating his commitment to supporting the movement's political project. If he does not join the council group (the group leader can refuse pursuant to Article 14, paragraph 5 of the bylaws), he will do so from the Mixed Group. With this exit, the Democratic Party therefore loses a portion of its representation in the City Council, while the political balance in the Nuoro chamber appears increasingly in flux.
