A 3,000 euro fine for a trader from Cagliari who had put up for sale 10 kg of sea urchins (about 150 specimens) with a diameter smaller than the minimum required, i.e. 5 centimetres .
The sanction was issued after a check by the staff of the Naval Base of the Forestry Corps on the Poetto seafront.
The sea urchins, freshly caught, were brought back to the sea, while the transgressor was reported to the Municipality for further appropriate measures.
"The taking of sea urchins with a diameter of less than 5 cm - explains the Forestale - not only harms the consumer, but especially further impoverishes biodiversity and compromises the stock of the species, which is already in serious suffering".
