Schools and city parks closed, increased surveillance on coastal roads, and possible changes to traffic flow. For now, work is underway on hypotheticals , but with severe weather approaching Sardinia, it's essential to plan ahead. The island is concerned about the Mediterranean cyclone expected in the next few hours , which has been predicted to be particularly intense. The most exposed areas are expected to be the southeastern coast and the Sarrabus area . A new weather bulletin is expected by 2:00 PM today, officially defining the alert level: orange or red.
Meanwhile, a summit on the emergency was held yesterday. The Director General of the Regional Civil Protection Agency, Mauro Merella , together with the Regional Councilor for Environmental Protection , Rosanna Laconi, convened a videoconference briefing to share the updated forecast and assess the implementation of all necessary measures to reduce potential risks to the population. Maximum attention remains paid: the evolution of the weather situation is being monitored and the possible consequences are being assessed.
Among the options being considered is the closure to traffic of State Road 195 and other particularly exposed coastal roads.
According to the warning issued by the regional Civil Protection Department, strong winds, storm surges, and widespread rainfall, including showers or isolated thunderstorms, are expected from this evening until Wednesday, January 21st , especially in eastern and southern Sardinia. The adverse weather conditions will be in effect from 6:00 PM on Sunday until 6:00 PM on Wednesday.
The heaviest rainfall is expected between Monday and Tuesday, when showers and severe thunderstorms are possible. Strong winds are also expected across the island from Monday morning, with gusts of up to gale force in Sulcis Iglesiente and southern Campidano. Wave motion, combined with offshore winds, could cause a significant rise in sea levels along the coasts of the Gulf of Cagliari, with high waves and storm surges. In western and northwestern Sardinia, however, these events are expected to be less intense and more isolated.
