Even Cagliari citizens remember the 19-year-old student who took her own life a few days ago in the bathroom of the IULM University of Milan.

The UniCaralis student association displayed a banner in front of the University of Cagliari: « One cannot die in University. Against a merit that kills us », we read.

« "I failed in my studies" these are the words of the 19-year-old student found dead a few days ago in the bathroom of the IULM University of Milan. Four words that mark yet another case of "academic suicide" . Once again the social pressures to which male and female students are subjected have been the straw that broke the camel's back for a human life. We are faced with a generation crushed by generalized ideals of success, which do not take into account the peculiarities and obstacles of everyone's path, thus creating in those who "fail like the others" a strong sense of inadequacy, the thought of "failing " », says the association in a statement.

"Unfortunately - continues the press release - the message is frequently passed around that one cannot afford to make mistakes, one cannot take the time to stop and reflect or understand what one really wants , that everything must be done in an excellent way and in quick and pre-established times. A university system of this kind, which every day leads male and female students to have pressing conditions of hardship and strong malaise, is not helpful to young people nor is it fruitful for society".

According to Istat data, in Italy there are about 4 thousand suicides a year, 5% concern young people under 24, mostly university students: «It shouldn't be normal to die in university. We are human beings before being students, our lives are worth much more than what could be seen as a failure in the eyes of a hypocritical society ».
