From a former solidarity building, closed and abandoned for years, to a center for the homeless. Work began in recent days at the facility on Via Cilea, just steps from Viale Colombo. The large ground floor spaces will be used for two office blocks, as well as a social clinic and a temporary, daily recreation area, where guests can also enjoy a hot meal or a simple coffee. It will be a meeting place for those who, for one reason or another, find themselves wandering the city without a fixed abode. The first floor will be divided into two residences, one for men and one for women, with separate entrances and a concierge area. Each apartment will have three bedrooms and bathrooms, for a total of 11 beds.
The project was funded with just under €1 million from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with a series of specific objectives: combating poverty, providing temporary accommodation for people experiencing social, economic, and housing vulnerability, and providing integrated care. The facility will be dedicated not only to the municipalities of the Plus Quartu-Parteolla area, but also to other areas of the wider area.
With the completion of the work completed in recent days, the City Council has assured that the facility will be completed by the end of next winter. The fully renovated spaces will be managed by the extensive local network currently being established thanks to the active and structured contribution of third sector organizations. "The start of the Center's redevelopment project inspires renewed enthusiasm for a project founded precisely on collaboration, subsidiarity, and active participation," commented Marco Camboni, Councilor for Social and Generational Policies. "It will be another step in the journey we've begun, another opportunity to reach out to the many people living in extremely difficult conditions. Unfortunately, there are quite a few of them in Quartu, but with the desire to leave no one behind, we felt it was necessary to build this facility. It will become a point of reference for them, as well as a model for combating poverty, for welcoming, and for inclusion."
