The defender of the Catalan independence leader Carles Puigdemont, the criminal lawyer Agostinangelo Marras, has received the provision of the Sassari section of the Court of Appeal of Cagliari which revokes the politician's extradition order. The judges declared the procedure terminated.

An arrest warrant will no longer be pending on Carles Puigdemont, leader of the Catalan independence activists who have been in Belgium for months to avoid arrest.

It is the effect of the reform of the Spanish Penal Code, launched by the current government and already in force, with which the crime of sedition was repealed. Puigdemont will still be tried in Spain for minor offences. The pro-independence leader was the protagonist of an international political and judicial case, after the referendum in Catalonia and the subsequent declaration of independence from Spain in 2017.

Puigdemont had been arrested in September 2021 in Alghero and released at the request of the lawyer Agostinangelo Marras.
