Only a few months ago the Municipality of Porto Torres had started the procedure for the assignment of the geological investigations, necessary to prepare a project for the consolidation and safety of the rocky ridge that rises between the Nautical Technical Higher Institute and Piazza Amsicora. Now it will be possible to intervene thanks to the funding granted by the Region of Sardinia, equal to 130 thousand euros, resources allocated as part of contributions to local administrations for the preparation of feasibility studies and for the design of hydrogeological risk mitigation interventions in perimeter areas of the Plan for the Hydrogeological Structure (Pai).
In recent days, the administration has taken steps to ascertain the contribution, aimed at strengthening the rocky ridge to protect the archaeological area owned by the Mibact, at high risk of subsidence due to coastal erosion. On the site are the arcosolium tombs, one of the most important funerary complexes of ancient Turris Libisonis. A complex of about 50 tombs in the area behind the Nautical school, dug into the limestone hill, near the Scoglio Lungo, used between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD
Discovered by Guglielmo Maetzke in 1963 following excavation works which seriously compromised its conservation, the site consists of four adjacent rooms, in the walls of which numerous arcosolia open. Some of the burials identified, distributed between sarcophagi and pit tombs, have yielded important grave goods.
