Appeal trial against the four former Syndial executives , acquitted in the first instance of the charge of environmental disaster for the unauthorized landfill in the so-called "poison hill" of Minciaredda, in the former Porto Torres petrochemical plant .
The hearing is scheduled for July 2.
The Prosecutor's Office holds defendants Gianluca D'Aquila, Luigi Volpe, Francesco Misuraca, and Giovanni Milani responsible for the lack of maintenance, surveillance, and inspections at the landfill. Built without permits during the industrial boom, the landfill in Minciaredda contaminated the area's soil and groundwater with substances that are partly carcinogenic and highly toxic, such as benzene, toluene, various hydrocarbons, arsenic, and sulfates.
In the first instance, the Court of Sassari acquitted them, with a ruling dated September 13, 2022, rejecting the request for a 2-year and 8-month sentence filed by the prosecutor, Enrica Angioni. The Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of the Environment appealed that ruling. They were joined by the other civil parties, namely the Municipality of Porto Torres (represented by Fabrizio Bionda, of the Legal Department), the Municipality of Sassari (represented by Anna Laura Vargiu), the Region of Sardinia, the Asinara National Park Authority, and the WWF.
