Piazza Maxia, Via Arezzo, the park on Via Cagna, Via Fracastoro, Via Malpighi, and Via Fermi : the list of places in Cagliari where poisoned baits have been found in recent days is long. Wraps of meat or other food conceal a deadly trap, designed to target dogs, cats, and birds, but which pose a serious danger to anyone, especially children .
These are no longer isolated incidents . The national association Earth Odv has reported this, having collected numerous reports of poisoned baits abandoned on city streets , as well as inside a private courtyard and in the immediate vicinity of a nursery school.
"It is important to remember that poisoning an animal is a criminal offense," the association emphasizes in a statement, "and the presence of poisons or toxic substances in the environment poses a serious risk to the human population , as well as causing environmental contamination and damage to wildlife." Further cause for alarm is " the absurd habit of some people scattering poison powder along roads, entrances, and sidewalks ."
"We continue to ignore the true gravity of the phenomenon and the serious consequences for those who commit these crimes," says Leila Delle Case, regional director of Earth Odv . "The problem is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Health, which has launched an interactive national portal to computerize reported cases and constantly monitor the situation, to support both citizens and the competent authorities."
The association also recalls the existence of a contingent and urgent ministerial ordinance prohibiting the use and possession of poisoned bait and treats, which actively involves mayors, veterinarians, local health authorities, prefectures, and owners of poisoned animals. " The mayor has specific obligations," concludes Delle Case, "to initiate an investigation, clean up and signpost the affected areas, and intensify inspections ."
