From September 17th to today, in just under four months of activity, the Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery of Sassari has performed 184 surgical interventions on small patients, reducing waiting lists by approximately 50%. The interventions have involved a wide range of pathologies, from abdominal emergencies to urological problems, up to complex situations that in the past would have required transfer to another facility on the island or even outside of Sardinia.

"We have managed several emergencies and carried out interventions, planned to take into account the needs of children and their families. This achievement demonstrates the dedication and high professionalism of our team committed to pursuing corporate and regional objectives", says Francesco Saverio Camoglio, head of the Sassari facility.

The department has halved the number of patients waiting for surgery, first by "cleaning" the lists of all those patients who, in some way, have sought and found an answer in other centers on the island or the continent, thus going from about 800 to less than 400 patients. Subsequently, by making the most of the spaces offered by Aou, the aim was to resolve the surgical problems of patients actually waiting for surgery. But Aou's objectives for the new year are also others.

From January 10, 2025, a new Pediatric Surgery clinic will be operational at the Giovanni Paolo II hospital in Olbia, thanks to an agreement and in collaboration with the ASL Gallura. It will be the first decentralized service of its kind in Sardinia, with appointments bookable through the CUP system and will be operational every second Friday of the month in the afternoon: "Bringing our doctors closer to patients is a strategic choice to ensure timely diagnoses and reduce travel," explains Antonio Lorenzo Spano, general director of the AOU of Sassari. Pediatric Surgery at the AOU also aims to increase the use of minimally invasive surgery, already applied in the majority of interventions, both emergency and elective. This less traumatic technique guarantees a quicker recovery and a significant reduction in post-operative pain.

"We are working to offer increasingly cutting-edge pediatric surgery, minimizing discomfort for our little patients", adds Professor Camoglio. Finally, on January 15, the Aou of Sassari will welcome a new neurosurgeon, associate professor, also an expert in pediatric oncology who will enrich the Neurosurgery structure, directed since December 1 by Sabino Luzzi: "This appointment is part of a broader program aimed at strengthening medical excellence in our company". "We are aiming for the future with the objective of ensuring the well-being of young patients and their families, always putting them at the center of our actions. By strengthening its skills and facilities, the company wants to confirm itself as a point of reference for pediatric healthcare in Northern Sardinia", concludes the general manager Antonio Lorenzo Spano.
