A devastating bang. Then the tragedy, heartbreaking and shocking. Alessandro flew away, torn away from the world and from his mother who sat next to him, inside the car that crashed into another car on the old Sardinian Orientale, in Orosei.

The baby was three months old. The mother, Angelica Farina, and a friend were taken by helicopter to the hospital in Sassari. The other friend on board the ambulance car in Olbia. The Orosei worker driving the other car was unharmed but in shock.

The accident

The road accident occurred yesterday afternoon in Cala Liberotto. The child was traveling in the back seat, next to his mother and with other women, aboard a Fiat Panda which collided head-on with a Golf driven by a motorist from Orosei. The passengers of the small car got the worst of it. Nothing to do for little Alessandro Zamatretta Delgado, Mexican father and mother from Orune.

Investigations

The military also set to work to shed light on the exact dynamics of the accident which occurred on a stretch of road already the scene of other fatal accidents. A sequence which, although not clear, is certainly linked to a lane invasion by one of the two cars involved.

Orune in shock

“We are shocked, the whole community is in shock for this creature and the girls involved, it is a huge tragedy,” declared the mayor Giovanna Porcu. In Orune everyone knew little Alessandro, also because all of his mother's fellow villagers fondly followed Angelica's return from Ireland, who had decided to give birth to her baby in Barbagia. That he would be baptized soon: «In recent days his mother had come to the office to talk about the baptism that would be celebrated in the next few months, the news leaves me astonished», says the parish priest of the town, Don Andrea Biancu.
