Ready to restart its engines, yet off the regional planning radar. Oristano-Fenosu Airport remains absent from the Regional Transport Plan, despite the technical process for its opening now being in its final stages.
The facility is still closed, but a crucial step has been taken: in recent days, ENAC adopted the Airport Regulations, a necessary step for the start of operations. "The Airport Regulations were finally approved on December 16th," explains Sogeaor's sole director, Riccardo Faticoni. "Now we're waiting for a date to be set for the final inspection and the resulting opening decree."
From an administrative standpoint, the finish line is near, but the airport's future lies elsewhere. In its comments to the Region on the draft Transport Plan, Sogeaor outlines Fenosu's goal: to become the hub for central Sardinia, playing a complementary, non-competitive role with other Sardinian airports. A network infrastructure, designed for civil defense, air rescue, firefighting, light logistics, and niche regional air mobility. "Oristano-Fenosu Airport can significantly contribute to improving the PRT," Faticoni emphasizes, "provided it is appropriately integrated."
Alongside its potential, the document also highlights critical issues: the approximately 1,199-meter-long runway, the lack of public transport links, the lack of rail integration, and weak ties to the industrial port. These issues currently isolate the airport, but which, according to the management company, could be resolved through regional planning.
Thus, while the technical process is ready for takeoff, the radar remains off. Without recognition in the Autonomous Region of Sardinia's Plan, Fenosu risks reopening without a clear path.
