Eighteen youths who were involved in a massive brawl in front of Oristano Cathedral on the night between January 3rd and 4th have been identified and charged, with violence erupting in the surrounding streets.

The investigative activities, carried out by the Police Headquarters' Mobile Squad, allowed the reconstruction of the dynamics thanks to the analysis of images from the area's video surveillance systems.

The clashes, likely caused by alcohol and drug abuse, began around 11:50 pm on January 3 and continued until 1:10 am the following day.

Initially, two groups of youths clashed in Piazza Duomo, where a heated argument quickly escalated into a brawl in front of the church of Santa Maria Assunta. The intervention of the State Police, supported by Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza patrols, sparked a stampede.

But then the first group chased the second, which had been outnumbered, and the violence resumed with the use of improvised weapons such as glass bottles, pepper spray, and belts.

To respond to the attack, five young men reached a house under renovation, taking iron bars and wooden planks from the construction site , regrouping and preparing a response of their own.

Only the timely intervention of the Flying Squad, who had resumed their search in the meantime, prevented more serious consequences.

All those involved have been reported to the competent judicial authorities. The Oristano Police Chief also issued verbal warnings to the participants, demanding that they "conduct themselves in accordance with the law and in a manner respectful of proper social order, while also initiating constant preventive monitoring of them."

For seven of those reported, who are not residents of the city, procedures have also been activated to issue mandatory expulsion orders (DASPOs), which prohibit them from returning to the Municipality of Oristano for a period of one year.
