The owner of a trucking company was reported by the police at the end of a check by the Olbia traffic police. At a checkpoint on the Sassari-Olbia road, the agents stopped an articulated lorry, checking in particular the instruments relating to the European legislation on maximum driving times and minimum breaks and rest periods for drivers.

Heavy vehicles are in fact equipped with an on-board computer, the chronotachograph , to be checked for one's own safety and that of others by drivers, employers and the responsible bodies.

From the analysis of the recorded data, some inconsistencies emerged which triggered the in-depth investigations: after having disassembled part of the dashboard, a mechanism was found inside the dashboard, with manual activation to interrupt, if necessary, the information the control unit sends to the instrument , in such a way as to alter the operation of the device to record the rest activity while, in reality, the vehicle was in motion, thus circumventing the driving and rest times envisaged by the regulations.

The driver's driving license was withdrawn, the vehicle was taken to an authorized technical center where the fraudulent device was confiscated, the owner of the road haulage company was reported for the crime of removing the precautions intended to reduce the risk of accidents at work.
