Olbia will be the first major center in Sardinia to be reached by natural gas . Starting in September, Medea, the Italgas company, will kick off the replacement of LPG with natural gas in the city network, which today serves 7,500 families.

It is the largest conversion operation ever carried out in Sardinia and will act as a sort of test for the analogous intervention which will affect Cagliari, Sassari, Oristano and Nuoro in the coming years, also under concession to Medea.

In this way, Olbian families will be able to have a cheaper, safer and more sustainable source of energy than the one they use today. The digital transformation of the networks, Italgas also announces, will also enable the distribution of renewable gases such as biomethane, green hydrogen and synthetic methane in the near future, favoring the further decarbonisation of consumption.

«The arrival of methane in Olbia - declares the managing director Ruggero Bimbatti - represents another appointment with the history of the great methanisation work that the Italgas Group has been carrying out in Sardinia since 2018. An engineering, operational and technological effort that will allow the first large urban center on the island to enjoy not only the advantages of methane but also a smart, digital and flexible network ready to welcome renewable gases as well».

The conversion intervention will be divided into three tranches which correspond to the three territorial areas into which the city network has been divided. Each area will be served by a cryogenic LNG depot which will guarantee flexibility, security and continuity of supplies.

The detailed program will soon be published on the website www.medeagas.it , with the dates and districts progressively affected by the conversion. Families must start taking action, because once the conversion is complete, the LPG supply will be interrupted and the new methane service will only be usable by those who have signed a new supply contract and produced the safety documentation required by law.

To provide all the useful information to citizens and clarify any doubts, Medea, in collaboration with the municipal administration, has organized a public meeting on Tuesday 4 July at 6 pm at the Archaeological Museum .
