Four passengers in possession of cash that was not declared to customs and was over the permitted limit were stopped at the Olbia General Aviation Airport by officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency together with the Guardia di Finanza.
It is an Italian headed to France carrying 11 thousand euros; a Norwegian citizen from Switzerland with 15 thousand euros; an American citizen from the United States with 43 thousand euros, and an Israeli from Israel with 14 thousand euros. For a total of over 82 thousand euros undeclared.
The transportation of cash or similar securities is free for total amounts less than 10,000 euros, the Customs and Monopolies Agency reminds. "It is instead necessary to fill out a declaration, to be signed exclusively at the customs offices upon entry into the State or upon exit from the same, when transporting sums equal to or greater than 10,000 euros".
Failure to declare constitutes a violation of currency regulations "and entails, for movements of cash with an excess of up to 10,000 euros, administrative seizure of 30% of such excess and the application of an administrative sanction of 10% to 30% of the amount exceeding the limit". While for movements of cash with an excess of more than 10,000 euros, "administrative seizure of 50% of such excess and the application of an administrative sanction of 30% to 50% of the amount exceeding the limit is envisaged".
All passengers decided to settle the situation by paying a reduced fine, equal to 15% of the amount exceeding the permitted limit.
