In September the provision with which the government will officially open the self-candidacies of the territories to welcome the single national repository for nuclear waste will be ready.

The announcement comes from the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin , who took part in an event on nuclear power that took place in the Chamber of Deputies. Naturally, explained the exponent of the Meloni government, " we will need to make assessments on the suitability of the territories ".

Waste disposal is a story that has been going on for years and which also directly affects our island.

The radioactive waste produced so far is kept in temporary deposits, all waste deriving from past activities, from the decommissioning of nuclear plants and from the health, industrial and research sectors.

We are talking about a total of 95,000 cubic meters of waste, of which 17,000 with medium or high activity, the remaining 78,000 with low or very low activity . Waste that the government wants to put in one site.

Sogin, appointed by the government, in March 2022 sent the proposal for a National Charter of Suitable Areas (Cnai) to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, identifying 67 of them among Piedmont, Tuscany, Lazio, Puglia, Basilicata, Sicily and Sardinia .

AREAS IN SARDINIA

There are 14 suitable areas identified in Sardinia. Four in the Oristano area: one concerns the municipality of Siapiccia , another the municipalities of Albagiara, Assolo, Mogorella and Usellus , the third the municipalities of Assolo and Villa Sant'Antonio , the last the municipalities of Albagiara and Usellus .

The remaining 10 are in Southern Sardinia. One Nuragus , then in Nurri , yet another affects the municipalities of Genuri, Setzu and Turri , another those of Pauli Arbarei, Setzu, Tuili, Turri, Ussaramanna . And again: one in Gergei , one in Guasila , one in Ortacesus . The last three concern one the municipalities of Segariu and Villamar , the other those of Mandas and Siurgus Donigala , the last one the municipalities of Las Plassas, Pauli Arbarei and Villamar .

This is the last step before the final choice of the area: to avoid protests from local communities it was decided to open self-nominations, in the hope that at least one of the sites identified by Sogin will be a candidate.

Pichetto Fratin does not exclude that " military areas made available by the Defense " may also be taken into consideration.

HOW WILL THE DEPOSIT BE LIKE

It will be built in an area of approximately 150 hectares, of which 110 dedicated to the depot itself and 40 to the technology park . It will make it possible to dispose of all the radioactive waste produced in our country and once completed it will make it possible to demolish all the temporary deposits in which they are currently stored.

The plant will receive low and medium activity radioactive waste, i.e. waste which, over 300 years, will reach a level of radioactivity such as to no longer represent a risk to man and the environment. Pending the availability of a geological repository, medium and high activity waste will be safely stored in a different temporary storage facility, called CSA, High Activity Storage Complex, located on the same site as the national repository .
