Twenty-nine out of twenty-nine, as widely predictable, and the motion is approved by the City Council. The new stadium of Cagliari will be the "Gigi Riva" .

The mayor, Paolo Truzzu, explained the reasons before the vote, starting right from the landing on the island of Rombo di Tuono: «A choice full of meaning, made by those who were not born in this city, but who chose Cagliari as the his home . It wasn't the easiest or the cheapest. He had arrived with some disappointment, when the island was synonymous with backwardness. He was lucky enough to find a family after a complicated childhood».

Then the mayor shifted his attention to the 1970 Scudetto, branded by Riva: « We can understand the social and political value of this event from the stories of those who lived it: every time I speak with a witness, I see that changes attitude, I see a face that lights up, eyes that speak for themselves and tell us about emotion and passion. It wasn't just a sporting event, but an opportunity for the redemption of a people ».

Finally, he recalled the moment in which he proposed the naming to the person concerned: «Gigi was excited. After making the necessary exorcisms, he reasoned that I would not have expected but that pleased me: he told me he was happy to know it before he died, to be able to live this moment and that it would be even more beautiful for him to be able to see it. I gave him my word that we will do everything possible to make this wish come true. We are talking about a Sardinian: even if he was born in Lombardy, he is one of us. And this is the best gift we can give him ."
