Northern Sardinia Land Reclamation Consortium: €12 million in infrastructure to combat water waste

"Yesterday we inaugurated the project submitted to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which involved engineering the consortium's infrastructure to make the water distribution network more efficient. Specifically, the project's goal is to measure the volumes of water passing through the various nodes, starting from the dam, through the main pipelines to the secondary ones, and finally reaching the meters that deliver water to farmers." This was stated by Giuseppe Bellu, general director of the Northern Sardinia Land Reclamation Consortium, at the thematic roundtable held Friday morning in Ozieri, a discussion titled "Water, Territory, Future 2026," moderated by journalist Giorgio Fresu, which focused on the major challenges of climate change, distribution efficiency, and the depopulation of inland areas.
Two infrastructure projects have been funded for a total of approximately €12 million to ensure monitoring and reduce water waste. "The €3.2 million NRRP work is complemented by an €8.5 million project funded by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, which essentially serves to supplement the NRRP work. We're talking about an investment of approximately €12 million," Bellu continues, "which will be completed soon and will be used to calculate the water balance of our distribution network. The NRRP project is completed and tested, while the one funded by the ministry is still ongoing. We're talking about work aimed at calculating the water balance of our network in order to assess where the greatest losses occur and thus decide how to invest public funds to improve our network."
The combination of these two projects will allow the Consortium to create a truly integrated sector-specific water balance system. It will be possible to track the journey of water resources along the entire supply chain—from the source to the end user's meter—instantly detecting any anomalies, physical leaks, or unauthorized withdrawals.
This digital infrastructure will act as a shield to protect the area's excellent agri-food products, such as the PGI Sardinian Lamb and the PDO Sardinian Spiny Artichoke.
