Nile fever takes its third victim in the Oristano area. It is Luigi Masala, 70 years old, dean of pastry chefs in the city.

The man, who also suffered from other pathologies, had been infected with West Nile virus in August and had been the first case on the island .

Masala had been hospitalized in serious conditions in intensive care, then there had been a slight improvement and he had been discharged from the hospital but, given his condition, hospitalization in a health facility had nevertheless become necessary. Then complications from Nile Fever precipitated the situation and the man died.

The news of his death aroused great dismay and emotion in Oristano where Masala was well known for his pastry business , but also for the training courses he held in the past for the youngest to reveal the secrets of the trade and pass on a tradition which gave prestige to the city.

This is the third victim due to the virus transmitted by mosquitoes : at the end of September a 65-year-old woman from Sant'Anna (agricultural hamlet of Marrubiu) died while a few weeks ago an 89-year-old from Oristano died (both suffered from other pathologies) .

In the Oristano area this year Nile fever has not given a break, eight cases in humans have been ascertained since August: five in Oristano, one in Riola Sardo, one in Simaxis and Marrubiu.
