From Sardinia to New York and Philadelphia , starting from Cagliari and Olbia : these are just some of the new destinations planned by the "Nuove Rotte" call for proposals of the Regional Council , an initiative promoted by the Department of Transport in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Crafts and Commerce. The aim is to expand the offer of air transport to and from the Island, improving connectivity, encouraging the mobility of Sardinian citizens and stimulating the flow of tourists all year round. It is a pity, however, that while the Region is ready to connect Sardinia to America, it has forgotten the Island on the map, as highlighted in the image accompanying the press release .
Among the main novelties of the tender – as underlined – stand out the direct connections between Sardinia and the United States, with flights from Cagliari and Olbia to New York and Philadelphia. All this to respond to the growing interest of American tourism in Sardinia and to strengthen connections with strategic international hubs.
The call for proposals provides for an allocation of 10 million euros for each of the years 2025 and 2026 , intended to cover 50% of airport costs for both departure and arrival routes. In total, 67 new air routes are planned that will connect Sardinia with numerous destinations in Europe and around the world, selected on the basis of tourist attractiveness, passenger demand and the need to strengthen international connections.
"Our goal - declared the Transport Councillor Barbara Manca - is to guarantee Sardinians greater mobility opportunities and, at the same time, encourage the arrival of tourists throughout the year, contributing to the economic growth of the Island".
The call is not limited to flights to the United States, but also includes connections to Istanbul, a strategic international hub that will facilitate access to destinations in Asia and other regions of the world. Numerous European cities, including Paris, Berlin, London, Madrid, Warsaw and others, will be connected to the airports of Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero, offering new travel opportunities for Sardinians and tourists from across the continent. In addition, new national connections are planned, such as the one to Lamezia Terme, to improve transport between Sardinia and Calabria, and the possibility of activating internal regional routes, such as those between Alghero, Cagliari and Olbia. An interesting novelty also concerns the Cagliari-Ajaccio route, which could offer an answer to the recent difficulties in maritime connections between Sardinia and Corsica.
