It was an anemometer: a tower over 90 meters tall that was supposed to measure the wind and determine whether that area in the Villanovaforru countryside was suitable for a wind farm. Installed in 2023 by a multinational, for two and a half years—since it collapsed in May 2024 for unspecified reasons—it has been reduced to a pile of abandoned scrap metal. "Do you like it as a model for ecological transition?"
The provocative question comes from Mayor Maurizio Onnis, who has been fighting speculation for years and, in turn, pushing for energy communities.
For this reason, in publishing the image of the metal waste, he adds: "I'm forestalling the usual chap who at this point impatiently says, 'Enough protesting. Propose something!'" I reply: 'Study, you ignorant person, and get informed. We've developed the proposals, complex and well-informed, presented them in public meetings, brought them to the table of institutional policy. And we have nothing in our hands. This is what the State has granted: nothing.'"
After years of peaceful resilience, Onnis adds: "If you want to know what dull, repressed anger is, asking us. Resentment smolders here too. And it has deep roots, so deep that it's impossible to erase."
