A breakthrough has been reached in the investigation into the death of Smeraldo Luzzi, which occurred in Olbia on June 22, 2024, after more than a month of agony. Luzzi died from the severe injuries sustained after falling from a car rental tow truck. Tempio Prosecutor Alessandro Bosco has filed four suspects for manslaughter.
The suspects are the owner of the car rental company, the Olbia-based company's safety manager, and two emergency medical workers. The employer and the victim's colleague are charged with failing to implement accident prevention measures. The indictment describes the victim as a "de facto worker," employed in the company's interests without a proper contract. The two are being represented by attorney Gerardo Giacu.
Two emergency medical personnel, the two specialists defended by Gabriele Mariotti and Pierangelo Loddo, are also under investigation. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the doctors allegedly refused to admit Luzzi on May 10, 2024 (the day of the accident). Having intervened at the victim's home, they allegedly considered Luzzi's refusal to admit him as "an expression of a decision to refuse transportation." However, the prosecutor writes, the patient was "unable to comprehend the potentially fatal consequences of withholding treatment" due to his head trauma. Luzzi's family is being represented by lawyer Stefania Gottero.
