Not only astronomy and cosmology: important repercussions are also expected from the Einstein Telescope in terms of industrial applications and repercussions on the territory similar to what happened for CERN in Geneva.
This was stated by the Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, in the hearing before the Production Activities Commission of the Chamber, referring to the international project of the instrument intended for research on gravitational waves that Italy would like to host in Sardinia, in the mine of Sos Enattos, in Lula . The Netherlands has also applied as a competitor.
The Einstein Telescope «is an underground telescope, the only one of its kind in existence, for studying gravitational waves. It is not only useful for those who study astrophysics and cosmology, but», observed the minister, «it has very strong applications in the industrial field» and to build it «it is necessary to resort to all the excellent industry we have available».
Referring to the members of the Scientific Committee set up by his ministry for the Einstein Telescope, Bernini said that "everyone is currently contributing to the creation of our candidacy, which will be announced by our government when the Prime Minister deems it appropriate". If Italy manages to host this instrument, its construction will bring "a breath of entrepreneurship to a region that has the ideal conditions for the Einstein Telescope," Bernini said.
"It will also create", he concluded, "an economic, technological and social compound similar to what happened for CERN in Geneva".
