A hole of (at least) 6.5 million euros in Area's coffers due to non-payment of rent by delinquent tenants. The crackdown is coming. The regional housing company has received operational directives from the Regional Council. And among the objectives is "the recovery of credits entered in the budget and the containment of arrears, increasing the combined action of surfacing tax evasion and adopting strategies to this end".
The missed payments are a burden for the body that manages the public housing on the Island. The resolution states that those "credits represent a necessary source for the functioning of the body, considering that Area's activity is based mainly on resources deriving from the rental of owned properties". And if the tenants do not pay, there is no income necessary to make the machine work. To avoid the increase in rents in recent years, the Region had allocated 9.5 million. But Area cannot be a bottomless pit.
The Board then established that "the Company will have to specify the results of the actions undertaken and any consequential activities to the start of the recovery procedure implemented in order to achieve the objective".
Other objectives include "the implementation of an extraordinary program for the building recovery of public housing units owned by the Company", "the implementation of the structural and social redevelopment intervention of the Sant'Elia neighborhood" with the recovery of Favero and Lame. Also planned is "the updating of the Plan for the sale of public housing units and non-residential real estate units included in buildings intended for Erp" and "the need to regulate the procedure for the alienation of non-residential real estate units owned by the Company".
