On Thursday evening, Arst announced a "temporary reduction in service" on the Cagliari Metro.

"We would like to inform you," reads a statement on the company's website, "that due to a technical problem, tram service has been reduced on the Redentore-Repubblica route, while it is suspended on all other lines."

The cause of the crash was apparently a switch that failed to activate in Monserrato, sending one of the vehicles off the course.

"It will take several hours to restore service," Arst added.
