Mayors unarmed against the waste covering the countryside of the Cagliari hinterland. From Selargius, to Monserrato, from Quartucciu to Sestu: the fields are reduced to landfills, littered with open-air dustbins that disfigure the landscape and pollute the environment.

A difficult battle to win against vandals who fill the ditches of rural roads with rubbish, but also the vineyards, reed thickets and Mediterranean scrub. In the thousand landfills scattered across the area there is everything: car tyres, stacks of asbestos, piles of sheathing and other building material, car parts, aggregates, plastic materials and old household appliances. A sample of scary shame.

The battle of the municipal administrations to overcome the emergency is daily but winning is proving impossible, given that the reclaimed landfills reappear in a very short time like mushrooms in the same places.

The Municipality of Selargius is among those most affected. Many actions have been implemented, as have the resources allocated. In Pitz'e Pranu, on the border with the Settimo territory, in recent months a gigantic landfill was discovered near the nomad camp: a hundred old cars without license plates and carcasses devoured by fire. Nobody's carcasses. And, in the middle, the inevitable piles of waste of all kinds. “A surreal thing, a persistent situation of environmental degradation,” said mayor Gigi Concu. The administration spends over one hundred thousand euros on reclamation every year. And recently it has invested further resources to purchase new cameras and a drone for checks from above."

The Quartucciu area is not doing any better, where the Municipality has intervened several times to clean up the “S'Ecca is conillus” countryside. However, in sites reclaimed with public resources, waste has reappeared as much and more than before. On a dirt country road, not far from the ring road that leads from provincial road 15 towards Settimo and Sinnai, the "show" is desolate: rubble of all kinds with often nauseating smells. There is no shortage of waste even in the immediate vicinity of Simbiritzi, which straddles the Quartu area.

Just as there is no shortage in the countryside of Monserrato where the carabinieri of the station, coordinated by lieutenant Pierpaolo Sabiu, a few days ago intervened on the land of an entrepreneur who was managing an illegal landfill of waste and vehicles to be scrapped which spilled used oils and other polluting materials.

In short, the budget always seems to be at a loss. And the many cameras placed in the area, as well as the fines that are still plentiful compared to the past, have not frightened the barbarians of the countryside who deface even the few remaining vineyards.
