Writer and historian Massimiliano Fois is the new president of the Alghero Workers' Mutual Aid Society.
Legally established in 1883 but pre-existing since 1857, the Alghero Workers' Mutual Aid Society, still headquartered in the Bastioni Marco Polo, continues, after many years, its mutualistic and, above all, cultural mission. It currently has about eighty members and hopes to increase this number by 2026.
The Societies, founded in Europe and then throughout the world in the 19th century, with Garibaldi and Mazzini as their patrons and honorary members, aimed to provide mutual assistance among workers, such as financial contributions for illnesses, medical expenses, and other aid, through a common fund supported by the contributions of members and donors. In the modern era, without ever abandoning the social purpose—the ideals of freedom, equality, and brotherhood—the association organizes or promotes cultural events, meetings, courses, and more. The Board of Directors has also been renewed, comprising Luciano Pinna, the outgoing president and a former railway worker; Paolino Bitti, a former prison guard; Giulio Masala, a former factory worker and trade unionist; and teacher Saphira Pittorru.
